Compare and Contrasting

I am a 17-year-old high school student, and I have lived in a very democratic city on the West Coast all of my life. I have lived in a very liberal household, and my education has long held a liberal bias. Because of this, I now consider myself as someone who is very left-leaning on most issues, but I personally feel as though I would be considered as an Opportunity Democrat, as on major issues I agree with solid liberals, but I am very moderate when it comes to economic policies. This comes from a survey I recently took from the Pew Research Center. According to it, my opinions heavily favor the left, but in some instances are quite moderate.

One controversial issue ever since the founding of the United States has been whether or not the US should be involved in foreign affairs. Many liberals, including myself, believe that it is the best for the country's future interests that we involve ourselves in global politics. In the past, the United States has had isolationists periods. While very few in number, when the US remains out of world politics, our own self-interest has not gotten advanced as well as we will have no say in future matters that may concern us. Now, many people on the right of the political spectrum, specifically Country First Conservatives,  believe otherwise, as they believe we should just be a military superpower and stay out of the way of other nations. Let them sort themselves out. I disagree, as do Opportunity Democrats, because if something bad happens, we will have no say in that particular issue as we didn't help when it happened, and will not be listened to if something happens. An example of this could be if I ask someone for help, and that person says no, but when I succeed that person wants a share of the profits I will not give it to them. If we are not involved in the beginning then we can't be in the thick of it in the end. These two groups are not polar opposites on the political spectrum but still have vastly different views on this issue.

A current issue that relates is that of the fact that President Trump's actions tend to put extended pressure on our NATO allies, by doing this such as even threatening to pull out of NATO. He feels as though the other countries in NATO are not pulling their weight. Now, many conservatives, although not including New Era Enterprisers, agree with the president, as this is a step in caring primarily about our interests and pulling out of the messy politics that NATO presents. On the other hand, many educated liberals believe this would be a terrible thing, as NATO is a great thing for our nation, and the US pulling out would weaken it tremendously and may extend to hurting economic relations with those European countries. I personally side with the left, and more solid liberals,  as NATO is a beneficial thing not only to all the countries in the treaty but also for the United States.

Another controversial issue between Opportunity Democrats and New Era Enterprisers is the state of the economic system in the United States. The former believe that anybody can get to the top with enough hard work, while the latter believe the system is broken and in shambles and needs to be fixed.

Now, I, of course, have a bias because of my beliefs. All beliefs come from somewhere though, and there are two main influences on mine. The first being my parents. I was raised in a very moderate household, but my parents have taught me to find the facts of both sides before I make a decision. There are always two sides of a story. To me, the facts seem to align more with the left than the right. But as moderate as they are, they strongly believe in equality and choice, and for all of those issues, I am very left leaning. The second major influence is my education, as the majority of people who have taught me since middle school are left-leaning. These teachers don't expressly state their opinion, but it is clear by how they teach, and the amount of emotion towards certain subjects, was very influential. Those are a couple of influences.

  1. One strong thing here is your comparisons between policies, you come off as very thorough and knowledgeable. You could make it even stronger by fixing some of the run on sentences and fleshing out the fourth paragraph just a bit more.
