POV/Purpose

Interest groups are a necessary component of American Democracy. Popular Sovereignty is a primary theme, and a great way to show how you feel on a national level is to join an interest group. An interest group is a group that makes policy related appeals to government. The purpose of this is to represent the views of its members and to push its own agenda. They influence the government by making the actual bills of politicians, calling and making their own wants known, and giving a lot of money to politicians who support said interest groups. Interest groups will also provide valuable information to politicians as the size of an interest group can show what the citizens want.

A specific example of an interest group in the United States is the American Civil Liberties Union, or the ACLU. Their goal is to protect the civil liberties of American Citizens, but also immigrants, both illegal and legal.

This is a screenshot from their website. The ideological perspective of this organization is very liberal, as shown in the first paragraph. This is shown by the organization's dedication to equal rights, when they say, "The ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project is dedicated to expanding and enforcing the civil liberties and civil rights of immigrants and to combating public and private discrimination against them", which is a very liberal thing, as many conservatives believe civil rights is no longer an issue in this country. The purpose of this excerpt seems to be to inform citizens of what the ACLU does, and why civil rights are still an issue. We can tell this during the second paragraph, as the writing is very descriptive about what the ACLU actually does to combat the problem, in their words, "Using targeted impact litigation, advocacy, and public outreach, the ACLU protects the rights and liberties of immigrants." The last sentence of the first paragraph also explains what the issues are. One limitation to this point of view is that it doesn't explain what has actually been done to infringe civil liberties to citizens, and instead decides to focus on actions the ACLU takes. This doesn't give me any information on specific things they fight against. One possible cultural influence on the point of view of the author could be located. The ACLU is located in New York City, which is a left-leaning city, and the opportunities to see actual immigration at the borders they are referencing are limited. That is the ACLU and a analysis of something on their website.

  1. Again, your analysis is very thorough but could be made stronger by editing down run on sentences. I would also define a few terms for the reader, like "popular sovereignty".
